Frequently Asked Questions

1) How do I add my site to HumGuide?
A: Simply click on the 'Add/Update a Site' link that is on the bar of links under the logo on every page and follow the instructions. A basic listing is free. You can have an Enhanced Listing which can give you more visibility and much more leeway with your site description. Enhanced Listings are very reasonable. Please see our Advertising Page for all the marketing opportunities on HumGuide.Your site needs to be about something in Humboldt County or be for a business owned and operated in the county. This information has to appear somewhere on the site itself.

2) What does it cost to advertise on HumGuide?
A: All our options and costs for advertising can be found on our Advertising Page. If, after reading that, you still have questions, please feel free to contact us. We would be happy to customize a package for you.

3) Can you send me information on relocation, jobs, housing, tourism?
A: No, sorry. Everything we have is on the site. We have no extra documents to send via email or regular mail. HumGuide is designed as a portal for finding the right source for getting that kind of detailed information.

4) How do I find...?
You can find information on HumGuide through several methods. You may browse our categories of links by either starting at the home page or by choosing one of the top level categories from the 'Directory' menu item that appears near the top of every page.

You can also choose from several HumGuide specific Features such as a special page for relocation resources or tourism resources by choosing from the 'Features' menu item.

Finally, you can also use the search field in the navigation menu of every page. If you don't get the result you want try these tips: Check to make sure you have spelled things correctly; reduce the number of words in your search; try a different, but related term. The search engine looks at site titles descriptions and keywords associated with the listing.

Please refer to the 'How to Use HumGuide' page for further information on finding your way around the site.

5) What happened to the Discussion Forum?
A: We are currently re-working the Discussion Forum to make it easier to use, have it better integrated with the HumGuide system and provide more features. We plan to have the Forum revived this summer.

6) What is 'My HumGuide'?
A: If you have registered as a member of HumGuide (a simple process and free) you can click on My HumGuide to get to your personal area of the site. There you will see any Classified Ads you have posted, or can post one. You will also see any web sites listed in our database that you have submitted or are associated with. You can also edit your personal membership information, and post, view or edit Classifieds. Future features we have planned are subscribing to various email notifications of changes in the site such as new classified posts per category, new web sites added, subscribing and unsubscribing to a newsletter and creating a mini-HumGuide of favorite links and categories withing HumGuide. Let us know if you have suggestions for other features.

7) What do I do if there is a broken link?
A: We try to keep links up to date, but with over 1600 links and a tiny, volunteer staff it's difficult to be perfect. Please make a note of the URL or the name of the site that you discover to be broken and send us an email. We will try to find an updated web address for the site or, failing that, we will delete the listing from the database.

8) What's with the ads on the right side of the page?
A: These ads are part of the Google Ad Sense network. HumGuide takes a lot of time and resources to maintain and this is one way for us to earn a little money to keep the site from disappearing. We earn a tiny bit of money every time someone clicks on one of the ads. They are intended to be conxtually sensitive. That is the ads should be related to the content of the web page where they are displayed. Google and HumGuide will continue to try and fine tune this to improve this contextual relationship.
