PEDS - Pedestrians for Education Development and Safety

Our Mission:   "To create a safe environment for all pedestrians, by educating governmental bodies, agencies and the public.  We will initiate the development and implementation of the necessary measures required for pedestrian safety."

PEDS SUCCEEDS

Thanks to the great efforts by the PEDS Committee, Humboldt County now has its first audible traffic signals. They can be found in Arcata and Eureka.

CalTrans recently completed the reconstruction of the two intersections of Samoa Boulevard with G street and H street in Arcata. Included in the project were audible pedestrian crossing signals for these intersections.

The street corners have two poles with an activating button on each pole. The North west corner of Samoa and G street has just one pole for both activating buttons. Each button has a Braille label and a raised arrow pointing to the street it controls.

Each box holding the activator button emits a Locator
sound.
To cross Samoa Boulevard, wait for the Cuckoo sound.
To cross either G street or H street, wait for the Chirp sound.
When the signal changes to allow crossing, the arrow button will vibrate until the signal changes back to the other direction..

The same signals can be found in Eureka at the intersections on 4th and 5th streets on R and V streets.
Further information may be obtained from the Handbook for Pedestrian Safety
