Unmet Transit Hearings Schedule

Each year the public can provide comment on transportation through an unmet needs hearing process. Stay tuned for the 2007 unmet hearings schedule. It usually is announced in April or May.

Extended Dial-a-Ride Service Area

Dial-A-Ride: Long-desired service has been extended to residents on Humboldt Hill, Manila, Samoa, Old Arcata Road by Donna Shipley

On Feb. 1 Humboldt Community Access & Resource Center (HCAR) began providing expanded Dial-A-Ride/Dial-a-Lift services. The expansion, resulting from an annual unmet transit needs survey done by Humboldt County Association of Governments, will include Humboldt Hill, Old Arcata Road, Manila and Samoa. Anyone living in these areas who qualifies for Dial-A-Ride services will be eligible to access these services with 24 hours notice.

The expanded service will be funded by HCAOG and ride fares. Dial-A-Ride tickets will pay for the fare of $2 per zone. Tickets are available at Arcata Transit, Humboldt Transit, and City of Eureka. These tickets are yellow and differ from the ones available at the Humboldt Senior Resource Center for regular Eureka Dial-A-Ride. HSRC will fax the application to Humboldt Transit.

If riders are not sure that their street is included in the new service, they should call to find out, 443-7077.

This expanded service has been asked for by residents outside of Eureka and Arcata for years, and it is one of the highest needs among seniors who are no longer driving and are unable to take public transit. But people in these new areas will need to use the service to keep it going.

With the financial support of grants from HCAOG and the Community Care Network of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange, HCAR has provided the Care-A-Van service since 1990. Care-A-Van has been strictly limited to providing medical transportation to people with no other means of transportation and who live outside the Dial-A-Ride service areas.

Care-A-Van has been a valuable tool to help promote community health, and it is our hope that this redefined Dial-A-Ride service will reach many more people and help enhance the quality of life for people who are unable to access public transit or the established Dial-A-Ride services.

Potential passengers may call Richard Farfan, HCAR transportation coordinator, at 443-7077. Donna Shipley is Humboldt Community Access & Resource Center's executive director.
