Balcony gets face lift thanks to CR class by Roz Keller It was love at first sight when Dane Cowan saw the aging and broken balcony at the Humboldt Senior Resource Center's headquarters at 1910 California Street in Eureka. Cowan, Associate Faculty in Applied Technology at College of the Redwoods (CR), loves old buildings and particularly likes to restore them to their original beauty. He says "It is important that we maintain the structures that are part of the wealth of our local history." He and his CR class in Architectural Millwork adopted the crumbling balcony as their restoration project. Cowan and students Larry Bravo, Michael Egan and Ron Nelson have completed and installed new balusters (spindles) and a new banister in their original style to match woodwork inside the century-old building. Sincere thanks to Dane Cowan and his class for contributing their
expertise towards making the old Washington School building beautiful and
safe for generations to come. -by Roz Keller, fund development manager. One-time article Copyright 2000 by Humboldt Senior Resource Center . |
