New osteoporosis prevention program is kicked off
by Julie Sessa

Strength training builds strong bones. That is the premise behind the COPE project. The California Osteoporosis Prevention and Education (COPE) Task Force, organized by the Area Agency on Aging, has developed a free/low cost strength training program for those 50 and older to help prevent bone fractures from osteoporosis. Other benefits include halting or restoring bone loss, improving balance, flexibility and energy, as well as helping with weight control.

On May 30 the public was invited to recognize National Senior Health and Fitness Day at a demonstration of the strength training program developed by COPE, based on studies by Miriam E. Nelson, PhD, of Tufts University. The demonstration was held at General Hospital Outpatient Rehabilitation Center.

Free/Low cost classes for people 50 and older will be offered at many sites throughout Humboldt and Del Norte counties in the coming months. COPE Task Force members include doctors, nurses, physical therapists, dietitians, activity directors from senior centers, health club trainers, long-term care facilities and other health professionals. Support has also been received from the Redwood Coast Music Festivals in the form of a grant for weight equipment and the RSVP Woodcrafters for storage boxes. The State of California and UC San Francisco are providing technical support and training for the class instructors. For more information or the locations of classes, contact Debby or Julie at 707-442-3763.

Julie Sessa is coordinator of special projects for the Area Agency on Aging.
