Del Norte Senior Center
New director creates and shines

by Sharon McKinney

In only a few weeks as its new director, Cyndie Brande has made a difference at the Del Norte Senior Center. Her vision, People First, is coming into view in many ways.
There is a newly decorated library, a computer ready to go on line, comfortable furniture, a new VCR and CD player donated by the Rotary Club, and a fireplace to add atmosphere to the cozy space. A volunteer will instruct on the use of the Internet. Another computer has been offered, too.

The nutrition program is now meeting its contract with the Area Agency on Aging with new staff, new ideas and the enthusiasm that means good service. A vegetarian meal on Tuesday has been added to the menu. Meals on Wheels has picked up recipients. A bus picks up diners and returns them to their homes. The public bus also stops at the center. The services are being developed and expanded as fast as the program will allow. A donation will purchase round tables for the dining room, making conversation easier.
Cyndie has a vision of the Del Norte Senior Center and the Crescent City community becoming interactive. To that end, she has changed the room that was used for Second Wind into an arts and crafts room. Thanks to public donations, many craft materials are in place. People with skills to share are coming forward to offer to teach their craft, not only to seniors but to anyone who wants to come and be involved.

An ongoing ballet class has formed, meeting Fridays at 4:15. Drawing will start this month with materials provided by the teacher. A writing club meets on the last Tuesday of the month at 10 a.m. Crochet lessons are provided Tuesdays from 2 to 4 p.m. Needlecraft is presented Wednesdays from 1 to 3 p.m. Some members have asked for tole painting. If you are reading this and have tole painting skills, please consider sharing them. Cyndie is open to input from the community.

The more people come, the more activities offered, the more volunteers are needed. Join the happy crew that now tends to the fun at the Del Norte Senior Center.
Cyndie asks the question: What would you like to see offered as an activity at the senior center? The Del Norte Senior Center's phone is 464-3069, and it is located at 1763 Northcrest Drive.

Sharon McKinney lives in Crescent City and volunteers her services at her daughter's classroom. Her e-mail is sjmck@earthlink.net.
