Area Agency on Aging
Caregiver training set

by Bella Holmes

The Caregiver Support Project at the Area Agency on Aging will sponsor a number of 30-hour caregiver training courses in Arcata, Eureka and McKinleyville.

These courses are open to both novice and experienced caregivers, as well as anyone interested in working in this rewarding field. Professional caregiving can be an ideal job for anyone who wants personally satisfying work and a flexible schedule.

Classes will be taught by Registered Nurses who will teach students to provide quality in-home assistance to elders and adults with disabilities. The training will also cover such things as employment issues, career tracks, local service systems and professionalism.

Completing this course (or its equivalent) will be one of the minimum requirements for a caregiver to be listed on the community-wide Caregiver Registry which will begin in May or June. Being listed on the Registry will benefit care providers by creating a professional support network and making it easier to find work that suits their individual preferences, skills and timetables.

Courses will be offered at the dates and times listed below. Classes may also be offered in Garberville and Willow Creek later in the year. Scholarships are available on a case-by-case basis.

For more information about Caregiver Training or about the Caregiver Support Project, please call the Area Agency on Aging, 442-3763 or email caregiver@a1aa.org.

To enroll you can also call the Eureka Adult School (441-2448) or the Northern Humboldt Adult School (839-6460) directly. If you're interested in future class dates, please call Bella at 442-3763.

Bella Holmes is project manager of the Caregiver Support Project.
