North Coast music treasures
Dixieland Jazz Festival celebrates its 11th year, but that's not all

               The North Coast is becoming known as home to a broad spectrum of good music and fun events. The Dixieland Jazz Festival, now in its 11th year, brings more than 10,000 people of all ages from all over to enjoy a long weekend of music and dancing. Proceeds for Redwood Coast Music Festivals go to benefit programs for local seniors and for youth music education. Put on your dancing shoes March 30-April 1 and enjoy!                Other music and art festivals are set throughout the year:

o            Blues by the Bay, Vol. 5, also produced by Redwood Coast Music Festivals, will be held July 14 and 15.

o            Mad River Festival of the Dell'Arte School for Physical Theater is set June 15-July 23. Phone 707-668-5663.

o            Arcata Interfaith Gospel Choir rehearses on Thursday nights at St. Albans, visitors welcome. Kids Choir and Youth Choir. 707-825-7589. Spring concert 7:30 p.m. March 10, Presbyterian Church, 11th & G, Arcata. $8 general, $5 senior & students. Reservations: 707-825-7589.

o            Berliner's Cornucopia classical music classes: a year-long study of the classics led by Leon Berliner in Eureka, 707-444-2378. See story page 6.

o            Ferndale Community Choir, Betty Diehl, director 31 years, 707-786-9756, 50 voices ages 16 to 82, www.ferndalechoir.com. Wide range of sacred music, classics to contemporary. Christmas and spring concerts. April 15, 8 p.m., Ferndale Catholic Church; April 21, 8 p.m., Lutheran Church, Arcata; April 22, 3 p.m., Congregational Church, Main Street, Ferndale. Call to join in the rehearsals for next season. Also the Chameleon Singers, a smaller group performs '40s music throughout the year.

o            GoldenAires, the Eureka senior chorus, rehearses at the Humboldt Senior Resource Center every Thursday at 10 a.m. and sings old favorites for groups all over the area. Shad Windbingler, leader. Info: 707-443-9747.

o            Humboldt Harmonaires Barbershop Chorus, meets Mondays 7:30 p.m. at Christ Church Episcopal, 15th & H, Eureka. A cappella harmony with about 30 voices. "A great place for the older guys to sit and enjoy themselves Monday nights!" says Mac Gardner. This is the group's 40th year. Men joining now will have time to learn the songs for the spring show, Saturday, April 28, 7:59 p.m. at Eureka High School Auditorium. Information: Mac Gardner,707-443-2004.

o            Humboldt Light Opera, Tickets 707-445-4310. Three family oriented shows a year, a good place for beginning stage people of all ages. Carol Rider is artistic producing director, 707-822-3319. Two Gilbert & Sullivan shows scheduled March 12-April 1 at CR's Forum Theater. Also the HLO KidCo, a performing arts academy for kids; new session starting April.

o            Merrie Melody Makers, a senior chorus, meets Wednesdays and Fridays 12:30 p.m. at  Arcata Community Center; travel throughout the county bringing music and music therapy to eldercare facilities. Leader, Alison Arrasmith, 707-822-7091.

o            Redwood Coast Children's Chorus & Youth Ensemble,  Kathe Lyth, 707-441-1592, since 1978, six chorus levels from two-year-olds through high school. Touring Chorus has visited the former Soviet Union, Romania, Venezuela and Europe. This summer will sing in Costa Rica. Wine-tasting benefit for the chorus in the Plaza View Room of the Plaza Grill, Jacoby Storehouse, Arcata, Thursday, Mar. 8 from 7 to 9 p.m.

o            Redwood Country Chorale (formerly Sweet Adelines) the ladies' barbershoppers, meets Wednesday nights, 7:30 p.m. Arcata Methodist Church. Info: Jon Majors, director, 707-443-1216.

o            Scotia Band, Michael McCliman, 707-725-3760, Monday nights, 7:30 p.m.

o            Steel drum classes with PANS, 707-822-7267.

Enjoy wonderful music

o            Concerts at the Fellowship, Sunday afternoon or evening concerts at the Humboldt Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, coordinated by Leon Wagner, HSU Professor of Music Emeritus. Variety of music including solo piano and violin recitals, classical, chamber music and jazz featuring people from out of town and top local talent. Concerts scheduled April 8, All Mozart operas, duets, trios; May 20 Jerry Moore with jazz presentations. Leon Wagner taught music for 25 years. Call for reservations, 707-839-3733.

o            Eureka Chamber Music Concerts, Pearl and Robert Micheli, directors, 707-445-9650. Five concerts a year held at Calvery Lutheran Church, 716 South Ave. at Prospect, Eureka. Next performance: Thursday, March 15, 7:30 p.m., Tian Ying, pianist.

o            Eureka Symphony Orchestra, concert season December through May. Next concert: April 6, 7, Congregational Church, Eureka. Kenneth Ayoob, conductor. Eight years. Tickets, 707-444-2889.

o            For Dancers Only, John Thomas leader, 707-443-4814. 14-piece ballroom dance band since Nov. '93. Now playing for the lobby dance at the Eureka Inn second and third Wednesdays every month, $5 cover.

o            West Broadway Company, Carol Rider, 707-822-3319. Six performers offer Broadway reviews, perform mostly for benefits.
