Washington School
Preservation Week honors old school buildings like ours
by Mary Beth Wolford
During the week of May 13, the country will celebrate National Historic
Preservation Week. This year's theme is "Restore, Renew, Rediscover
Your Historic Neighborhood Schools!"
This theme is especially fitting for the Humboldt Senior Resource Center
which is located in the one remaining square school house of seven which
were located in Eureka. These school houses were all named for presidents
- Washington, Grant, Jefferson, Lincoln - with the building at 1910 California
Street the only one remaining.
One by one, these school buildings were torn down and replaced with more
modern schools. Washington School was replaced with the newer Washington
School located on Dolbeer Street-however the old building was saved from
the wrecking ball and put to other community uses over the years.
The Humboldt Senior Resource Center is proud to presently own this beautiful
building. Elementary school classes will be invited to tour this nearly
century-old school during Preservation Week, and some of the seniors who
are former Washington School students will be offering guided tours to
the children.
Mary Beth Wolford, Ed.D. is HSRC's executive director.
