InfoVan
Information moves out into county

by Sandi Fitzpatrick

The Area Agency on Aging's (AAA) new InfoVan is ready to roll through neighborhoods in Humboldt and Del Norte counties. The InfoVan will provide information, exhibits and videos on a variety of topics of interest to older adults, people with a disability and their caregivers.

The InfoVan will help the AAA take information and resources into the more remote communities of the Northcoast. The van promotes local community outreach efforts predicated on person-to-person contact.

AAA staff and volunteers will be with the InfoVan to provide information on community resources. In addition, AAA will partner with other organizations to staff the van.

The InfoVan project is intended to connect people with services and provide quality caregiver support. People visiting the van can expect to find information on nutrition, exercise, preventive health, volunteer opportunities, safety, crime reduction, transportation and housing alternatives. Caregivers can learn about the variety of supports that are available.

The van is available for visits to senior centers, mobile home parks, senior apartments, assisted living facilities, or wherever a group of older adults might congregate. The van will be at health fairs and other community events.

The InfoVan is part of the Community Outreach for Independent Living grant directed by the California Association of Area Agencies on Aging. The grant is intended to assist people to live as independently as possible for as long as possible. Grant funding came from Governor Davis's Aging With Dignity Initiative administered by the California Department of Aging.

Sandi Fitzpatrick is executive director of the Area Agency on Aging. For more information or to schedule the InfoVan for an event in your community, call 707-442-3763.
