Assistive Technology Classes
Are you or is someone you know 55 or older and experiencing vision loss?
If so, there are free classes at the Humboldt Senior Resource Center that
may be able to help you.
If you've ever wondered how someone with vision loss reads newspapers,
e-mail or surfs the Internet, come have a "look" or possibly
"listen" to the assistive technology now located in the HSRC
computer lab. This technology includes programs that read the information
on the computer screen aloud and programs that enlarge information on
the computer screen. There's also a closed circuit television (CCTV) that
uses a camera to magnify hardcopy documents such as newspapers and magazines
and displays the documents on a screen.
Peggy Martinez, Assistive Technology Specialist, is available to teach
keyboarding, word-processing, e-mail and Internet skills. She can also
teach you to use the closed circuit television for reading hardcopy documents.
This free program is funded by a grant from the California Department
of Rehabilitation and administered by the LightHouse of the North Coast.
It is designed to educate seniors with vision loss in the use of assistive
technology that can enhance independence.
Please call Peggy Martinez at 707-443-9747 ext. 270 for an appointment.
