Briefs CSL incumbants reelected Senior Senator Mary Dennison and Senior Assembly Member Thea Gast have been re-elected to their positions in the California Senior Legislature (CSL) representing Humboldt and Del Norte counties. Elections were held during the week of April 29th using the forum method which allowed the audience to listen to each candidate and then vote for the one they felt would best represent them. Forums were held at McKinleyville Senior Center, Humboldt Senior Resource Center (Eureka), Del Norte Senior Center (Crescent City) and Healy Senior Center (Redway). The partnership with the senior centers was greatly appreciated. Established in 1981, the CSL is a grassroots way of ensuring senior citizen input into the legislative process. CSL elections are coordinated by California's Area Agencies on Aging. The nonpartisan CSL is composed of 40 senators and 120 assembly members. Humboldt and Del Norte counties are entitled to one senator and one assembly member. The Area Agency on Aging (AAA) would like to express their appreciation for the candidates: Mary Dennison and James Garvey who ran for Senior Senator and Thea Gast and Jerry McCrea who ran for Senior Assembly Member. The candidates' time, effort and enthusiasm was commendable. AAA would like to additionally thank those seniors who took the time to listen to the candidates and vote for their candidate of choice. -Chris Martinek for the Area Agency on Aging Collaboration to support medical and dental services St. Joseph Hospital has announced a collaborative arrangement has been developed between Open Door Community Health Centers (ODCHC) and St. Joseph Hospital (SJH) resulting in increased health care services for all members of our community. This collaboration involves a commitment by St. Joseph Hospital of $150,000 in support of the new, enlarged dental clinic that will be located in the Burre Center in Eureka. The dental clinic will be named the Burre Dental Clinic and is expected to open by the end of August 2002. "...Our commitment to supporting these efforts will continue through ongoing Community Needs Network grants," said Mike Purvis, president and CEO St. Joseph Health System-Humboldt County. |
