McKinleyville
What's going on?
by Barbara Ogden
It's time to update you on goings-on at our senior center. We've had a busy year. Where does the time go?
Our big news is that the McKinleyville Community Services District, our landlord, has finally given us the okay to go ahead with our expansion plans. Originally we were going to build a 3,600 square foot addition to the senior center and a therapeutic pool. The pool part of the project has been put on hold for awhile, but we're moving ahead with the center addition. We're excited about this because we are so short of room and storage space. We submitted our first grant application last week, so we're on our way.
This time of year is when we do a lot of catering. We just finished an English Tea luncheon for the Headstart folks, we're doing a party for the McKinleyville School District next week and, of course, potato salad for the Pony Express BBQ.
Our mini trippers have been out and about this past year. They have visited the Arcata Food Endeavor, the orchid farm and several businesses and museums in the county. They have fun, eat lunch someplace interesting and always learn a lot.
Our Wiley, Woolly, Wicked Widows have had lunch in about every restaurant in the county. They try a different one each month. One of their favorite places to eat is Gonsea.
We keep adding new clubs and activities to interest McKinleyville seniors. The Garden Club has become quite popular. Each month guest speakers share their expertise. Exercise classes are well attended and each offers something different. Our Sit & Fit offers newcomers a chair class to work their way up to the more strenuous classes. Our Investment Clubs are not very happy right now, but continue to be optimistic about the future. Bingo, pinochle and cribbage are popular, and duplicate bridge is twice a month.
Fundraising is something we continue to do every day. Currently we're having a 50/50 raffle. For a $10 ticket, you get a chance to win $1,500 in cash. We are constantly looking for new and innovative ways to make money-isn't everyone.
So as summer approaches, our center continues to grow. We greet new folks every day and are delighted to meet them.
Our newest endeavor is the McKinleyville Newcomers Club. This is a group for all folks new to our area. We'll try and introduce them to the community, give them some information and hopefully they will make some new friends along the way.
If you are ever in McKinleyville, stop in and say hi! We'd like to meet you.
