Local guide boasts new look, new services
by Robert Morse
Just in time for the tourist season, HumGuide (www.humguide.com), Humboldt County's oldest, most comprehensive and popular guide to local Internet resources has launched a new version of its site with improved navigation and enhanced services.
While all the familiar features of HumGuide will remain free and open to anyone, the site now offers new services for which small fees will be charged. Those services include enhancements to the popular Classifieds and enhanced web site listings.
HumGuide's popularity has always stemmed from the free services and inclusiveness of information the site offers. One goal in reworking the site was to maintain the integrity of the core services while providing users new tools.
Enhanced Classifieds will allow for more text, a longer run on the site and even the ability to include a photo of the item for sale. Similarly, Enhanced Listings will give site owners the opportunity to make their site stand out from others in the same categories. With more than 1,600 sites listed in HumGuide, it's easy for any single site to get lost in the crowd.
Other new services include the ability to access all classifieds, sites you have submitted, forum posts and other information through a simple registration and log-in process. This is just the start of what we'll be offering people who join the HumGuide community.
HumGuide has been an important part of the community since 1996 and has been run primarily by volunteers. But the site had grown very large and difficult to manage on a voluntary basis. The restructuring will allow for easier maintenance and expansion and provide a means to generate income that will help keep the site alive and thriving.
This project is funded in part by The North Coast Small Business Development Center through a grant from the California Technology, Trade and Commerce Agency Division of Science, Technology & Innovation. The goal of the grant is to help businesses in Humboldt and Del Norte counties gain access to e-commerce technology and technical assistance and training to improve their competitiveness.
