Benbow on the Eel River The all volunteer nonprofit group has been presenting professional acting companies since 1983 in the relaxed setting of Benbow Lake State Park two miles south of Garberville on Hwy. 101. The community endeavor has presented 52 productions and hosted seven acting companies from Northern California as well as the Anglian Open Air Shakespeare Company of the United Kingdom. More than 30,000 people from around the world have enjoyed the event. This year, back by popular demand, is the Bay Area's Festival Theatre Ensemble founded in 1994 by artistic director Bruce W. De Les Dernier. It is dedicated to the production of classical theater and the creation of stage adaptations of classic novels. The initial three-show season was created largely for touring, much as in the 16th century, when travelers might have been treated to a performance of a play or pastoral during their stay at a roadside inn. Festival Theatre Ensemble also performs interactive theater for schools with their productions of The Shakespeare Connection and Monsters and Clowns tailored for grades K-6. An edited version of Monsters and Clowns will be a bonus presentation during Puck's Picnic, Wednesday Aug. 14 and Friday, Aug. 16 at 6 p.m. before the evening production of Jackie and the Beanstalk. A Midsummer Night's Dream will be offered Aug. 13 and 17, The Tempest Aug. 15 and 18, and Jackie and the Bean Stalk Aug. 14 and 16. See advertisement this page for ticket prices. Make a night of it by enjoying the catered dinners before the play for an additional $15 for adults and $8 for children; Catered dinners on Puck's Picnic nights are $10 for adults and $5 for children.
