Del Norte-spend two days with authors
The second annual Northcoast Redwoods Writer's Conference will be held Sept. 6 and 7 in Crescent City. Inspired by Virginia Hinkley, a 78-year-old Del Norte freelance writer, the conference offers keynote speakers both days, workshops and one-on-one conferences with authors, publishers, editors and agents. The event will offer book signings and author readings both days.
Jane Kirkpatrick will be the keynote speaker Friday night, and Margaret Kirk is keynoter on Saturday morning. Kirkpatrick is a writer of historical fiction while Kirk is a novelist and short story writer.
Other authors present will be David Dunn, writer of thrillers; Joan Dunning, illustrator and nature writer; Jessica Inclan, novelist; Derrick Jensen, nature writer and philosopher; Bill Johnson, how-to books; Elizabeth Lyon, short stories; Clive Matson, poet; Pamela Service, science fiction and fantasy; and Larry Ulrich, nature writer and photographer. Literary agent Linda Allen will participate as will publishers Bradd Hopkins, Dan Logan and Bill Johnson.
Now in its second year with 14 faculty members the conference committee led by director Brian Bieber is expecting more than 150 people. The conference is sponsoring two writing contests: one for local grade school and high school students and one for attendees. It is the hope of the conference committee members that they will publish an anthology after this year's conference.
The $95 registration fee includes a continental breakfast, a catered lunch and coffee bar. For information call 707-464-3670, e-mail Bieber at babsbieber@aol.com or visit the web site: http://nrwconference.11net.com.
Editor's note: I attended the group's first conference last year and came away inspired and hungry for more. Congratulations, Brian and Virginia, for offering another creative conference for writers of Humboldt, Del Norte and southern Oregon! -Barbara Clark
