Senior Friends-nominate your unsung heroes
The Area Agency on Aging (AAA) is soliciting nominations for the 2002 Senior Friend Awards. AAA annually presents the Senior Friend Awards to individuals and organizations in recognition of positive efforts on behalf of elders in Humboldt and Del Norte counties.
There are two levels of eligibility: organization and individual: *Organization: a formally established entity or an informal group that has contributed significantly to older adults in our area. *Individual: an individual who, in a professional or voluntary capacity, has contributed significantly to older adults in our area.
A person's age is not part of the selection criteria. Members of the AAA board, advisory councils, staff and employees of subcontractors are not eligible to receive the awards.
Nominations may be submitted by members of the community or organizations.
Completed nomination forms must be returned to the AAA office, 3300 Glenwood Street, Eureka, CA 95501, by 4:30 p.m., Friday, Sept. 20.
For more information contact Suzy Smith at 442-3763 or e-mail administrator@a1aa.org.
Rent Rebate for 2002
With the Homeowner and Renter Assistance filing season in full swing, the Franchise Tax Board (FTB) is processing thousands of claims already received-preparing them for payment as soon as the budget is signed.
The Homeowner and Renter Assistance program provides a once-a-year payment from the state to qualified homeowners and renters based on property taxes directly paid by homeowners and indirectly paid by renters. For the 2001 claim year, eligible homeowners can receive a payment of up to $472.60, while renters can receive up to $347.50.
In addition to having paid property taxes or at least $50 in rent during 2001, eligible claimants must have had a household income of $37,119 or less and have been at least 62 years of age or blind or disabled on Dec. 31, 2001.
More than 402,000 claims had been processed by the end of August with an average payment of $302. The FTB reported it is starting to receive duplicate claims and increased calls from people who have submitted claims.
A statewide volunteer assistance program will provide free claims assistance through Oct. 15. To get help filing this claim, stop by or call the Humboldt Senior Resource Center in Eureka, 443-9747, or the McKinleyville Senior Center, 839-0191. See Homeowners/Renters assistance times on the calendar, pages 10 and 11 of this edition.
