Southern Humboldt County
What do seniors need?
The Southern Humboldt Continuum of Care Coalition (SHCCC) in conjunction with the Area Agency on Aging (AAA) is conducting a survey of Southern Humboldt residents to identify the senior needs of Southern Humboldt. The SHCCC exists to improve services for seniors. The survey will document senior and caregiver needs. SHCCC will then be able to look for grants to help respond to these documented needs.
Although the survey is primarily about senior services, it is being sent to 2,000 randomly selected Southern Humboldt County post office box holders of all ages. We would like input from the entire community on the subject of senior services. Senior services can be important not only to seniors, disabled adults and caregivers but also to the children, grandchildren, friends and neighbors of seniors.
The survey looks specifically at the respondents' awareness of senior social services, experience with senior social services, health and concerns, if they are a caregiver and any difficulty they may be having, and their plan for their own and family members' aging.
In addition to the survey included in the mailing will be a postcard allowing respondents to request information about services they are interested in. The AAA, through its Information and Assistance Program, will follow up with those requesting information about services.
The survey will be mailed out in mid-September, with several follow up mailings. If you should be one of those randomly chosen to receive a survey, please fill it out and mail it in. Or if you should know people who have received it, please encourage them to fill it out and mail it in. A report summary will be available by early January. If you have questions or would like a copy of the report, please call Chris Martinek, AAA planner, at 707-442-3763 ext. 211 or e-mail planner@a1aa.org.
