Eureka Veterans Clinic
Dr. Phillip Wagner receives well-deserved honors
by Patrick J. Mahler
The US Marine Corps League (USMCL), Six Rivers Detachment, honored Dr. Phillip Wagner and the staff of the Eureka Veterans Clinic in September for their dedication and service to veterans of Humboldt and Del Norte counties.
In 1990, when Dr. Wagner recognized that local veterans who needed medical care had to make the difficult choices of traveling 600 miles (often painful) to and from the San Francisco Veterans Hospital, or paying for expensive medical care themselves, or doing without needed medical care at all, he started providing local medical screening and triage examinations for veterans at his private medical offices.
In 1999 he took the personal and financial risk to give up his private medical practice in order to establish, nurture and lead the Eureka Veterans Clinic. Now, as a benchmark of the quality and success of his efforts, approximately 5,000 veterans depend upon the clinic and its staff for their medical needs. And they can get their prescrptions filled for $7.
Commendations, awards or plaques were presented by:
- US Veterans Administration, Ron Kernberg, Eureka Representative
- Humboldt and Del Norte Central Labor Council, Jim Smith, president and chief officer
- Humboldt County Medical Association, Dr. Ted Loring, board member
- Eureka City Council, Mayor Nancy Fleming
- Humboldt County Board of Supervisors, Bonnie Neeley, chair and member of the board's Veterans Committee; with additional remarks by Supervisor Jimmy Smith, member of the board's Veterans Committee
- Governor Gray Davis, by Past Commandant USMCL State of California, Paul Moore
- US Congress, Rep. Mike Thompson by USMCL Junior Vice Commandant Hollis McCoy
- US Marine Corps Commandant General James L. Jones by USMCL Senior Vice Commandant Arnie Millsap
- Gift of Appreciation to Eris Wagner by the Detachment's Marine Corps League Auxiliary President Betty Moore
- Outstanding Service Award (Plaque) from the Six Rivers Detachment by Cliff Moon (USMCL artist).
Patrick J. Mahler of Eureka is Commandant of the US Marine Corps League, Six Rivers Det. #655.
