Community meetings set Discuss senior needs in Fortuna
by Robert Siekmann

We are enthusiastic about the community meeting and open forum focusing on senior needs scheduled Saturday, Feb. 8, at the Presbyterian Church of the Redeemer, 1431 Ross Hill Road, Fortuna. As a congregation with a good percentage of older adults, this community meeting is one way we can give back to the community we have been a part of for more than 40 years.

Bring your questions, share your needs. Senior services agency representatives and other community leaders will be present to hear your concerns and serve as resources.

This is especially for Fortuna seniors and their families. Are the needs of older adults in Fortuna being addressed? We see this meeting as a starting point. Come. Talk. Listen. Build energy. Plan for the future.

We start with a complementary lunch at 11:30 a.m. For lunch planning purposes please contact us no later than Wednesday, Feb. 6. Call Betty Storz, 725-1288 (before 8 p.m.) or 725-5006 or e-mail presfortuna@att.net.

Robert Siekmann is the minister of the Church of the Redeemer.

Learn about dialing 211 for social services
by Marianne Nix

A free, accessible three-digit telephone number will soon enable everyone to access the vital non-emergency social services they need. 211 is a nationwide effort; currently 55 service providers are operating in 19 states and serving 18 percent of the population.

Every state in the union is organizing a plan to implement 211. In California, a highly regulated telecommunications state, we are actively negotiating with the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) and telephone companies.

Locally, many social service organizations have come together to form a steering committee to organize a Northcoast plan for implementation of 211. To this end, we have asked Statewide 211 Coordinator Burt Wallrich to come to our community. Burt will be in Humboldt County on Feb. 13, from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Wharfinger building in Eureka to discuss 211. He will be in Del Norte Feb. 12, from 8:30-11:30 a.m. at the Family Resource Center in Crescent City. Everyone is welcome. For more information and to reply, call me at 442-3763.

Marianne Nix is one of the members of the local 211 steering committee and the Area Agency on Aging's Director of Information Services.
