Memoirs Writing class puts together the pieces of a life by Darlene Barron My mother had recently passed away. My two sisters, sister-in-law and I were going through her meager possessions, sorting through the memories. How strange it was that we each had a different view of each item and event. As we shared her pictures and letters, I realized how much of my mother's life could never be recaptured-her specialness wasn't in pictures or letters, it was lost in her passing. It was then that I wished she had a journal documenting her life. Without these memoirs to pass on, my girls and grandchildren would never know the real person, the interesting and complicated person that was my mother. I came home with my treasures, little bits and pieces of my mother. While trying to get her life history in order, I wondered about mine. I saw an ad in our Redding newspaper about a senior writing group formed to help keep our memories alive for future generations. I called immediately and joined! The class was wonderful and full of interesting people. What a nice way to get together and share ourselves with others. I didn't get to attend many classes because my husband Anthony and I were preparing to move to Crescent City for our retirement. As we settled into our new community I began thinking about having a writing group here in our new hometown. I spoke with my friend Sharon McKinney about my intentions and was introduced to Cyndie Brande, the director of the Senior Center. Cyndie said, "that sounds like a good idea." So with Sharon's help and Cyndie's blessing I was off-making flyers and class schedules and getting notices in the community calendar. Beyond my wildest dreams, people came; the group was underway! We just picked a topic and ran with it! Please come and join the fun on Thursdays, 10 a.m., at the Del Norte Senior Center, 1765 Northcrest, and begin writing your memoirs. 707-464-3069 Darlene Barron is teaching the memoir writing class at the Del Norte Senior Center.
