Dollars and Sense by Jean Warnes This is short but very sweet! The subject is garbage. Eureka In Eureka the pick-up fee for garbage, using a 30-gallon can emptied weekly is $14.80 per month. Seems steep, especially for live-alone seniors who don't fill half a can. There is a way to save a good deal with a senior rate and a 20-gallon can. Of course you must buy a 20-gallon can, but that should pay for itself the very first month. The senior rate is $5.67 per month. You save $9 per month, $100 per year. In Eureka go to City Garbage, 929 W. Hawthorne, and apply for the senior rate. You must be 65-years-old or older and have proof of age. You must live within the city limits of Eureka. You must have a 20-gallon can. In the city the 20-gallon rate for other customers is $11.70 per month. You can also pay $5.38 each for prepaid bags. Those are 30-gallon bags to put out on the pick-up day whenever they happen to be full. Humboldt County *County rate near Eureka is $13.12/month. *20-gallon county rate is $8.80/month. *County prepaid bag is $4.55 per bag available to all ages. Arcata In-town customers can choose occasional service in which they call when the can is ready. On-call rate in city limits is $4.75 for just a garbage can, and $5.60 includes recycling service.
