Dollars and Sense
by Jean Warnes

This is short but very sweet! The subject is garbage.

Eureka

In Eureka the pick-up fee for garbage, using a 30-gallon can emptied weekly is $14.80 per month. Seems steep, especially for live-alone seniors who don't fill half a can.

There is a way to save a good deal with a senior rate and a 20-gallon can. Of course you must buy a 20-gallon can, but that should pay for itself the very first month. The senior rate is $5.67 per month. You save $9 per month, $100 per year.

In Eureka go to City Garbage, 929 W. Hawthorne, and apply for the senior rate. You must be 65-years-old or older and have proof of age. You must live within the city limits of Eureka. You must have a 20-gallon can. In the city the 20-gallon rate for other customers is $11.70 per month.

You can also pay $5.38 each for prepaid bags. Those are 30-gallon bags to put out on the pick-up day whenever they happen to be full.

Humboldt County

*County rate near Eureka is $13.12/month.

*20-gallon county rate is $8.80/month.

*County prepaid bag is $4.55 per bag available to all ages.

Arcata

In-town customers can choose occasional service in which they call when the can is ready. On-call rate in city limits is $4.75 for just a garbage can, and $5.60 includes recycling service. Recycling service can be used every week even if garbage is picked up only occasionally. People with existing service can just call the Arcata Garbage office and request occasional service. 822-0304.

County on-call rate near Arcata is $3.80 for one can.

Other areas

Because a number of other companies serve small areas around the county, please call your local garbage number to see what options you might have.
