It's a GEM
Advisory council advises readers to buy raffle tickets

by Roz Keller

How many seniors will fit into a GEM? Really, just two. But for the sake of the Humboldt Senior Resource Center, the HSRC advisory council tried to fit everyone in. From left at the rear of the GEM are Herb Pierce, Ted Phippen, Ben Chin and Roberta Cherney. Inside the car are Emmalena Thomson, Jackie Phippen and Allene Biasca, with Mary Chin crouched on the floorboards and Murline Georgeson peeking in from the other side. In front are Lee Purkerson and Don Biasca. Find any one of them in the community to buy a raffle ticket for the GEM. Photo by Barbara Clark

The Humboldt Senior Resource Center is the proud new owner of a GEM (Global Electric Motorcar) electric car thanks to a donation from Gary Barker of Northcoast Auto. This bright yellow and white cart, valued at $4,000, is being raffled to benefit programs of the Senior Resource Center. Tickets are $10 each and 3 for $25. The drawing will take place on the evening of Saturday, June 14 at the HSRC's eighth annual "Swing on a Star!" dinner dance at the Scotia Inn. Ticket holders need not be present to win.

This handy two-seater vehicle can be driven on city streets with posted speed limits up to 35 mph. It has a maximum speed of 25 mph and will run about 30 miles on one electric charge. The GEM comes equipped with your choice of a rear locking storage box, perfect for shopping trips, or a holder for two golf club bags.

These snazzy little cars are showing up all over town. They have a variety of uses such as grocery shopping, running errands, visiting friends or coming to the Senior Resource Center for lunch! They are useful for disabled individuals. An HSRC staff member saw one this weekend in the handicap parking spot in front of a local market.

Our goal is to sell 1,000 raffle tickets for the GEM electric car by June 14. The proceeds will be used to support HSRC's senior programs such as home delivered and congregate meals, Adult Day Health and Alzheimer's Day Care, care management programs for the frail and disabled and numerous classes, workshops and other senior activities.

Tickets may be purchased at the Greeter's Desk at HSRC's headquarters, 1910 California Street, Eureka. You may also get tickets from our advisory council members, board of directors, staff and friends. We're looking for supporters to help us sell raffle tickets. If you're interested in lending a hand in this way, call me at 443-9747, ext. 231. Be sure to tell your friends and family about this great way to support HSRC and maybe win yourself a little GEM!

Thanks again to Gary Barker of Northcoast Auto for the generous donation.
