One-day conference set
Of One Mind - Mental Illness and Dementia in the Elderly

by Donna Chambers

For anyone who works with, cares for or cares about older adults, there is a crucial need to have current information about the changes that aging can bring. On April 9 a one-day conference will be held in Eureka to examine some of the personal and professional issues involved in serving older adults.

The conference - Of One Mind, Mental Illness and Dementia in the Elderly - is aimed at health, social work and mental health professionals, along with family members, caregivers and the community at large. Scheduled for Wednesday, April 9, the conference will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Eureka Inn. Register by March 28 and pay only $25, including lunch and all materials. A limited number of scholarships are available and Continuing Education Units will be offered.

A coalition of sponsors includes the Humboldt County Mental Health Older Adults Program, the Humboldt Senior Resource Center's Alzheimer's Resource Center, the advisory board for In-Home Supportive Services, the Area Agency on Aging, the American Society of Aging, Quest for Excellence™ and the Northcoast Association of Residential Care Administrators.

They have joined to bring nationally recognized speakers to Eureka for this one-day event. Presenters include Wendy Lustbader, a Medical Social Worker and nationally acclaimed speaker and author on caregiving and dementia issues; Dr. Diane Tobias, a renowned specialist in Geriatric Pharmacotherapy; Patrick Arbore, ED.D., a nationally recognized expert in the fields of alcohol abuse, suicide and grief in the aged; and Dr. Brad Strong, psychiatrist with the Eureka Veterans Clinic. To register, or for more information on the conference or scholarships, please call Laura Holmes at 707-476-2118 or Maggie Kraft at 707-444-8254 ext.202.
