What's going on around the center

by Barbara Ogden

Every once in awhile we like to update you on what's going on here at the McKinleyville Senior Center. We are as usual, very busy with lots of things going on.

Spring is just about upon us and McKinleyville's town celebration, Pony Express Days (June 5-7), is getting close. Each year our center sells coffee in a mug for 50 cents. Folks really enjoy this so business is always good. But it takes us awhile to collect coffee mugs from people who donate them. Last year we collected more than 150 of the neatest mugs. We display them and folks get to pick one for their coffee

We've started a new First Wednesday luncheon each month. It used to be a potluck, but now we're doing the cooking and charging $3 for lunch. Folks sure like to come for lunch without having to figure out what to bring and then have to shop and fix it. After lunch we have an informative speaker. In February, Wendy Lang from the Dept. of Motor Vehicles gave us a better understanding of the DMV and answered tons of questions. This month our speaker will talk to us about reverse mortgages, a way to get regular income from your paid-for home.

Spring usually means our catering crew gets busy. We do lunches here at the hall for folks renting the facility for meetings and seminars. We charge per person, depending upon the menu. This is good money and our crew really enjoys catering

We welcomed 30 folks to our February 55 Alive driving class and had to turn away another 10. The Saturday classes are especially popular with baby boomers who are working Monday through Friday, so we're scheduling another class on Saturday, April 26.

We've recently added a humor club. We figured there's not enough folks laughing these days, so this group meets once a week and laughs. The instructors dress like clowns and they share jokes and funny experiences. They get everyone in the building laughing with them.

We've started a Falun Dafa class. This is an advanced exercise and meditation practice system of the mind, body and spirit. We now have an exercise class of some kind five days a week around the center.

Another addition to our schedule is an acupressure class. This class teaches where the special acupressure points are in the body that strengthen specific joints and gradually rebalance the system and relieve arthritis and rheumatism pain.

So that's what's new with us. Through our programs, luncheons, classes and services, we continue to reach out to McKinleyville seniors hoping to make a difference and increase the quality of their lives.
