April Activities
Every Monday, 12:30 pm Movie Matinee
Come enjoy popcorn and a movie. April 7, The Swan (1956) with Grace Kelly and Alec Guinness; April 14, Traveling Saleswoman (1950) with Joan Davis and Andy Devine; April 21, The Big Trail (1930) with John Wayne and Marguerite Churchill; and April 28, Two Girls and a Sailor (1944) Van Johnson, June Allyson and Gloria De Haven.
Share your life story
We think it's a wonderful idea for seniors to have their autobiography recorded on videotape for their families and descendants, so we are making this service available here by appointment. Someone will meet with you first to go over some preparatory materials to help you get your thoughts organized and ready to tape. It can be as simple as going through an old photo album and talking about the pictures. When you are ready, our videographer Skip Elam will help create your tape; multiple copies can be made (tapes supplied by you).
Wednesday, April 2, 12:30 pm Italian Lessons
Italian lessons return to HSRC! Max Garibay will again be teaching Italian every Wednesday in the Conference Room. Join us for the fun!
Every Friday, 11 am Yoga
Patricia Starr has resumed her weekly Yoga Class in the Conference Room. We are happy to have her back. New students are always welcome.
Tuesday, April 8, 1:15 p.m. Wildlife Care
A special presentation by the Humboldt Wildlife Care Center (HWCC) was rescheduled because of a power outtage in March. This nonprofit, volunteer-run organization rescues and treats injured and orphaned wildlife. They plan to bring a great horned owl and a western screech owl to show us, so don't miss it.
Wednesday, April 9, 7 pm HighSteppers April Dance
Join the HighSteppers and make new friends. Live music, door prizes, friendly people and great refreshments make this a wonderful evening for all ages.
Friday, April 11, 5 pm Sign 'N Dine
The dinner this month will be at Alice's Restaurant inside the Blue Lake Casino. (Take Hwy 299 east to the Blue Lake Exit.) Join this group of lively seniors for an enjoyable meal and conversation. The signup sheet is on the west Dining Room door, or you can call us to put your name on it for you (by April 4).
This is being held on a special day because the seafood buffet is on Fridays only.
Wednesday, April 16, 8:30-10:30 am Commodities Distribution
Low-income seniors, please take advantage of this free food distribution program sponsored by Food for People.
Tuesday, April 15, 12:30 pm Stringing the Pearls of your Past
This long-standing writer's group began meeting again at HSRC. They now meet in the Activities Room the third Tuesday each month. The focus of the group is on writing your own memoirs. Beginners are welcome. Join this talented bunch and start getting your own memories recorded for posterity. Everyone has a story to tell!
Monday, April 21, 10:30 am Government Chat
Our special guest speaker is our own Mary Beth Wolford, a newly-elected Eureka City Council member and also our Executive Director! This is your chance to chat with Mary Beth about all matters pertaining to seniors in our community. Please plan to attend this very popular event.
Thursday, April 24, 2:30 pm A Special Event: A Washington Elementary School Alumni Get-together
This reunion will be held in the Dining Room at HSRC. If you attended school here, please be sure to come! If you know anyone else who did, please let them know about this event.
Wednesday, April 23
Blood Draws for complete blood panels and PSA tests for men are scheduled April 23 and again on Wednesday, May 14, in the Conference Room from 8:30-11:30 a.m. (by appointment). Call Activities for an appointment time. (Fasting is required the night before.)
Ideas sought
Please give me your feedback on this idea for a new group: Story Hour. Many seniors have told me that they are no longer able to read as much as they used to for various reasons and really miss a good novel. Story Hour would be a chance to listen to a good novel being read, an hour at a time, for all to enjoy! If you'd like to be a narrator, too, please let me know!
