Fortuna Senior needs emerge from meeting
by Robert Siekmann

At the February meeting at Church of the Redeemer in Fortuna on unmet senior needs, attended by more than 50 people, several general topics emerged. Among them were transportation, shopping, meeting rooms, communication about available services and recreation. In their presentations and response to questions, the nearly ten representatives from agencies and organizations serving seniors were helpful.

Nearly 60 percent who attended completed an evaluation form. We asked the question, "What would you like to see happen in the future?" Two comments were typical of the general responses. "Keep up the momentum." "More meetings like this." There were also some more specific responses. "A large retail store." "A nice place to meet here in Fortuna." "More transportation out of the area (Fortuna)."

Other comments: "Eureka has a lot of social programs, but we cannot be driving to Eureka every day." "We do have a dining center, but no real senior meeting place."

This suggests several things to us for the future. One is that we should meet again. Another is that we should focus on one or more specific areas that emerged Feb. 8th. We hope to provide more specific details in a future Senior News, as well as getting the word out through flyers, articles, personal invitation and direct contact with those who gave us permission to do so. We plan to have a microphone and public address system for the next meeting.

If you would like direct notification of future meeting plans, please contact us by phone at 707-725-1288 (before 8 p.m.), or 725-5006, by mail at P.O. Box 87, Fortuna, CA 95540-0087, or by e-mail at presfortuna@att.net.

Robert Siekmann is the minister of the Church of the Redeemer.
