Senior Citizens Foundation announces grants The Senior Citizens Foundation of Humboldt County has announced that small grants will be awarded by the foundation for projects that enhance the quality of life for senior citizens in the county. Organizations and individuals are invited to submit grant requests. Partial funding for proposals is possible. Grant applications are available by calling the Humboldt Area Foundation at 442-2993. Applications and supporting documents must be submitted by May 1, and applicants will be notified by July 1. In 2002, Senior Citizens Foundation made the following grants: *Healy Senior Center of Southern Humboldt, $2,016, to purchase dining tables and chairs, a computer work station and office desk; *Klamath/Trinity Non-emergency Transportation, $1,000, to support a transportation program for seniors in outlying areas; *LightHouse of the North Coast, $1,500, to provide vision loss education and rehabilitation training; *Manila Community Services District, $500, to support the recording of oral histories; *McKinleyville Senior Center, $2,500, to pay for architect fees for an addition to the senior center; *Area Agency on Aging, $1,200 to provide physical therapist services for their strength training program; and *Vector Health Services, $1,000, to purchase bandages and supplies for low-income patients with venous insufficiency, diabetes and lymphedema. The Senior Citizens Foundation Fund was established in 1987 at the Humboldt Area Foundation to enrich the quality of life of the community's elderly. Through gifts, bequests and donations, it is building a permanent endowment to supply private funds to augment public funding for senior services. Vera Vietor established the Humboldt Area Foundation in 1972. Since that initial gift, more than 5,000 donors in Humboldt, Del Norte and Trinity counties have awarded $26.1 million through the foundation to worthy nonprofits, special projects and student scholarships. The Humboldt Area Foundation supports donors in their charitable giving with information, technical assistance, recognition, financial services and investment management.
