Visitors' Center
Center provides information and guides to history and activities
by Sharon McKinney
Imagine my surprise that I don't know as much about Del Norte County as
I thought I did! Since I have been volunteering at the Visitors' Center
upstairs in the Cultural Center at 1001 Front Street and answering the
interesting questions posed by tourists, I find that there are even more
treasures here than I had previously experienced.
For example, a young man came in to find out about bicycling opportunities,
and I learned that we have maps for bike riders and that there are scenic
routes for them to enjoy.
Among the many brochures, maps and descriptions are a history of the tsunami,
fishing regulations, camp site information, walking trails that are rated
for difficulty, bus routes, where to find Internet access for visitors,
the most productive tide pools and birding guides. We also give phone
numbers and addresses of other information agencies such as Redwood National
Park, Fish and Game, the Marine Mammal Center or the Senior Center.
What I want you to know is that this information is available to residents
too. It is a good place to gather appreciation for our beautiful county.
If the front stairs are daunting just press the button at the handicapped
entrance of the Cultural Center building and someone will come and let
you in and direct you to the elevator.
If you want a packet of information sent to a friend or relative, simply
call 464-3174 or www.northern california.net and request a visitor packet
or special information for people who are thinking about relocating here.
I enjoy talking with the visitors. Every day there are dozens of people
from all over California, the whole United States, and many other countries.
They like to tell about their trip, where they have been and where they
are going from here. I find myself enjoying their travels and their stories
with them.
Linda Ging, director of the Visitors' Center wants you to know that volunteers
are welcome. She is a gracious hostess for our county, and I have found
a place to give my time and knowledge about Del Norte County in a fun
and enjoyable way.
Some days, in addition to talking with visitors and finding information
for them, I might be folding a newsletter for mail, or assembling the
packets that go out all over the world, or marking the gift items. It
is a pleasant place to volunteer, and I encourage you to do some traveling
right here at home by coming to the Visitors' Center and seeing for yourself
what's going on.
