Fortuna
explores senior needs
by Robert Siekmann
Almost 45 people met in June for a second community meeting at Church
of the Redeemer in Fortuna focusing on unmet senior needs.
After opening with refreshments the group divided into three Senior Needs
Study Groups-Activities & Facilities, Transportation, and Referral
and Information Services. After a complementary lunch, the group met as
a whole to share reports from the three study groups along with a summary
and visualizing of what directions might be taken in the future.
A review was made of suitable existing facilities for senior activities,
with the input that late morning to early afternoon were the best scheduling
times, Monday through Friday, with some Saturday activities. People expressed
concern about how to serve the transportation needs of seniors who live
outside the city limits and are ineligible for the senior bus, along with
the value of having a taxi here.
Possibilities that emerged included working with the Humboldt Senior Resource
Center or other groups to coordinate existing activities or petition for
additional services.
More than 15 people expressed interest in forming a Fortuna based nonprofit
organization for the purpose of serving senior needs, including advocacy.
Could we even dream of a dedicated senior center for such things as lunch,
activities, information and referral services and health related activities?
For further meeting details or to indicate your personal interest in pursuing
some of these possibilities, contact Church of the Redeemer by phone,
725-5006, or 725-1288 (before 8 p.m.), by mail at PO Box 87, Fortuna,
CA 95540-0087, or by e-mail at presfortuna@att.net.
Robert Siekmann is the minister of the Church of the Redeemer.
