Shakespeare

Three delightful selections lure travelers to the warmth of Southern
Humboldt
One of the many highlights of this year's
Shakespeare at Benbow Lake
is The Adventures of Cyrano playing Aug. 17 and 21 at Benbow Lake State
Park. Written with children and families in mind, Festival Theatre
Ensemble's director, Bruco De Les Dernier wrote this slapstick adaptation
based on characters from the classic play Cyrano de Bergerac by Edmund
Rostand.
The fun-filled play follows the quixotic
quest of Cyrano, the
gentleman warrior with the huge nose, to win the love of the beautiful
and
clever Roxanne. With Cyrano fighting a new pack of comic villains, the
play
is full of exciting sword fights, slapstick chases and silly disguises.
Reason alone to reserve a ticket for Adventures
of Cyrano is that
there's a special cameo appearance by southern Humboldt's own comedic
actor,
Bob Burns of Ray's Shop Smart in Redway. Burns, a local theater lover
and
supporter (South Fork High School Drama department, Feet First Dancers
and
Shakespeare at Benbow) evoked fits of laughter from local audiences a
few
years ago with comedic performances in both The Nutcracker and Persephone.
He'll no doubt tickle theatregoers again this year playing the part of
Monsieur Cabbage, the greengrocer.
On both nights of Adventures of Cyrano,
Puck's Picnic will be served
for the reduced price of $10 for adults and $5 for a child's plate.
Admission for Adventures of Cyrano is at the family price of $15 for adults
and $10 for children. Tickets are on sale now and may be purchased by
calling toll-free 877-407-7499, Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to
6
p.m., or on line at www.shakespearebenbow.com, or at the gate the night
of
the performance. Reservations are advised. For more information call
707-923-1060.
Shakespeare at Benbow Lake's 21st season
also includes The Taming of
the Shrew (Aug. 14, 16, 22) and a stirring Richard III (Aug. 15, 23).
Dinner
is served from 6 p.m. and curtain opens at 8 p.m.
