Voucher program is delayed by state budget
by Deborah Krzesni
The Area Agency on Aging is entering into
the third season for the
Senior Farmer's Market Nutrition Program. The program was developed by
the
California Department of Aging with funding from USDA and the state. It
has
increased the intake of fruits and vegetables of California seniors and
offers support to California's small farmers.
Participants of the Title III Elderly Nutrition
Program and the Brown Bag
Program are issued coupons that can be used at the local farmer's markets
to
purchase fresh fruits, vegetables and herbs. In Humboldt and Del Norte
counties this program has been embraced by both the seniors and farmers.
Last year, coupons were distributed to 1,000 seniors, with a total value
of
$30,000.
The California Department of Aging will be distributing
the coupons to
the 33 Area Agencies on Aging within the state based on senior population.
Locally, 500 booklets valued at $20 each with a total value of $10,000
are
expected. In addition to the reduction in number of expected coupon books,
the program faces new uncertainties.
It was recently determined that coupons cannot be released
until the
state budget is passed. Timing of budget approval could affect the number
of
coupons available on the North Coast. If the budget is delayed into the
fall, the local markets could close before the coupons can be released.
It
is also possible that Humboldt/Del Norte could receive extra coupons
originally designated to other communities because markets in other areas
have a shorter season than those on the North Coast.
During this time of uncertainty, the
Area Agency on Aging can assure
one thing, the available coupons will be distributed as soon possible.

Eureka Veterans Clinic open to qualified vets
We apologize to readers for publishing the incorrect
number for the
Eureka Veterans Clinic in the July paper. The correct phone number for
the
clinic is 442-5335.
To apply, submit an application which you can
obtain by phoning the
clinic or picking up at 714 F Street, Eureka. Discharge papers (DD214)
must
accompany the application. The application process takes about a week.
If
the veteran is eligible, an appointment will be made to be seen at the
clinic. Eligibility is based on income level, whether the vet is service
connected or not and if she or he has ever been to a VA facility.
