Area Agency on Aging
New directory lists senior and caregiver resources
by Julie Sessa

The new Information Directory for Seniors, Caregivers and their Families has just been issued by the Area Agency on Aging. The new purple directory has a detailed table of contents that will direct readers to the chapter discussing their chosen topic. It provides brief descriptions of terms and services (from Dial-A-Ride to Social Security) and helpful tips (from hiring a caregiver to taking prescriptions). New chapters include Caregiver Information and expanded Del Norte County service listings.
The Information Directory is free of charge, thanks to support from numerous local organizations, including the Redwood Coast Music Festivals. Directories can be found at senior centers, I&A offices and other locations around Humboldt and Del Norte counties.

Senior I&A

Senior Information and Assistance (I&A) has been assisting Humboldt and Del Norte residents with questions from seniors for more than 20 years and now expands to help caregivers and family members. A service of the Area Agency, I&A's resource specialists are available by phone or in person to discuss individual situations and to make referrals to programs and services.
In Humboldt County, call 442-9591 or drop by at 1910 California Street. In Crescent City, visit the Del Norte InfoCenter at 207 Price Mall or call 464-5500. Senior I&A can also be reached toll-free at 800-408-4636. They are also available to make presentations or meet with individuals.

New Web Sites

Technology has now made it easier to access the I&A database of programs and services from your home or office. If you have a computer, you can go to the Area Agency's web site at www.a1aa.org or the Del Norte InfoCenter web site at www.dninfocenter.org to find information about services and community activities. Each site links to a comprehensive listing of local, regional and national programs. These resources are intended for seniors, caregivers and their families, so they cover a broad variety of services.
Julie Sessa is coordinator of Senior Information and Assistance for the Area Agency on Aging.
