Public hearing
Are we meeting the challenges of serving rural seniors?

Assembly member Patty Berg will chair a special interim hearing of the Assembly Committee on Aging and Long-Term Care to examine access to care and services for seniors in northern California.

The hearing titled "Are We Meeting the Challenges of Serving Seniors in Rural California-A System Review" will look at health care, community-based services, economics and manpower in relationship to the graying of California.

It will be held Nov. 12 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. in the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors' chambers at 825 5th Street in Eureka. The public is invited and will be given the opportunity to comment at the close of the hearing.

"I have long been aware that we have challenges in rural areas that are significantly greater than those faced in urban areas," Berg said. "However, many programs that serve seniors have formed unique partnerships and collaboratives that have resulted in some outstanding services and cost-effective uses of resources. This hearing is an opportunity to hear from seniors, community leaders, elected officials and providers around northern California."

Elected in November 2002, Berg represents the 1st Assembly District which stretches from the Oregon border to include Del Norte, Humboldt, Mendocino, Lake, Trinity and parts of Sonoma counties. In addition to serving as vice chair of the Assembly Committee on Aging and Long-Term Care, Berg is also on the Assembly Committee on Water, Parks and Wildlife and serves as chair of the Joint Committee on Fisheries and Aquaculture. She currently serves on the Assembly Agriculture, Appropriations, Higher Education, and Transportation committees and was recently appointed to the Select Committee on California Wine.
