We're listening Whenever we send out subscription renewal cards, readers have an opportunity to take a survey about Senior News content and tell us what they think. Other readers will see the same survey printed in the paper four times a year. We appreciate your responses. In the most recent readers' survey compiled in December by Editorial Advisory Board member Ed Uyeki, the most-read stories were health tips, Medicare and health care. Next in importance was the calendar of events, humor and HSRC News and Information. Third in importance were laws, legislation, local people stories and community issues. Then followed activities, letters to the editor and Another Peak Experience written by Lucile Manley. Next came retirement stories, financial and legal planning and intergenerational stories. Coupons brought up the rear, close in numbers to the popularity of poetry. Classifieds, Remembering Spirit, Ask Yenta, Electronic Highway and baby boomer stories were all hanging out at the bottom of the list. One hundred and forty-three readers filled out surveys of the 238 subscription renewal cards that were returned. Some of your comments o I really enjoy reading it every month, from cover to cover, even with my magnifying glass. o Please no more about those cats Lucile Manley writes about. She's good. Cats awful. o The personal humorous stories are my favorites. o I read it all. It's a good newspaper with lots of important information. o There isn't any part we don't like. You're doing a good job. o We need the paper closer to the first of the month. Miss too many things at the first of the month. o I would like fill-in puzzles. o Try to get more on Del Norte and environmental issues. o Senior News has something for everyone. I do enjoy the poetry. o I like all of it, but the first two things I read are Peak Experience and Yenta. o No criticisms, has great articles for all. A great public service publication as usual. Comments from the editor The paper is printed on the last Thursday of the month. It goes into the mail the next Monday. Sometimes that cuts off some of the first days of the month. I suggest that you check in with your favorite senior center the last week of each month and see what's coming up so that you won't miss anything. We have had an offer of a crossword puzzle at an affordable rate. Adding a crossword will probably wait until we can be a 20-page paper all the time - when we have advertising to support it. Right now we don't have room for a puzzle. We like your praise, and we also appreciate your criticisms. The Editorial Advisory Board always discusses the survey, and we make decisions about whether to make any changes as a result of the numbers and the comments. As a result of this discussion, we'll revamp our Electronic Highway column and bring in more new technologies and useful web sites especially pertaining to the monthly theme of Senior News.
