ASA/NCOA Joint conference will be rich with workshops, information by Barbara Clark A number of local aging professionals (people who work with people who are growing older) plan to attend the annual joint conference of the American Society on Aging and the National Council on Aging that will be held mid-April in San Francisco. Senior News publisher and Humboldt Senior Resource Center Executive Director Joyce Hayes will attend, as will HSRC board member Diana Noyes. Others attending from HSRC are Cynthia Ross and Kim Laney of the Ombudsman Program. Hayes is interested in innovative ways to serve the new generation of elders, while Noyes, who is also chaplain at Hospice of Humboldt, is interested in end-of-life issues, the needs of baby boomers and state-of-the-art adult day health facilities. Cynthia Ross and Kim Laney are interested in other forms of elder advocacy and in programs of other Ombudsman centers around the state. "The Road Ahead - Taking the Journey Together" will attract more than 4,000 people for some 13 special mini-conferences, 1,000 sessions and 50 topical tracks. This is the fourth joint conference of the two organizations. From the introduction in the conference announcement: "Today the aging comunity stands at a crossroads in our journey together. The signposts to the future are obscured in shadow. Economic and political uncertainty has deferred our dreams - dreams of equity in health care, a secure retirement and a productive old age, an invigorated, informed and dedicated workforce to meet the needs of an aging society." Some of the special tracks include: Adult Day Services, Alzheimer's Disease, Assisted Living, Culture Change, Disability, Education, Elder Abuse, Emerging Issues, End of Life Issues, Gay and Lesbian Aging, Grandparenting, Health Care, Housing, Humanities, International Issues, Legal and Ethical Issues, Leisure and Recreation, Long-Term Care, Men's Issues, Public Policy, Mental Health, Religion and Spirituality, Rural Issues, Senior Centers, Sexuality, Transportation, Women's Issues, Workforce Issues. Complete information on the conference, including descriptions of all the sessions, registration and travel information, can be found on the ASA-NCOA Joint Conference website at www.agingconference.org.
