Senior Resource Center celebrates 30 years

by Joyce Hayes

2004 marks the 30-year anniversary of the Humboldt Senior Resource Center. This benchmark in our history provides a time for reflection and a time to recognize HSRC's place in this community. It is also a time that we are keenly aware of the challenges that lie ahead.

The mission and values set forth by our board of directors remains the driving force that propels the work that staff and volunteers do for seniors, disabled adults, families and caregivers. HSRC is fortunate to have dedicated board members who donate their time and talents and also a loyal, knowledgeable staff who carry out the agency mission with compassion and kindness. Through the years many things have changed but the dedication and quality care provided by the staff remains constant.

Our past accomplishments have been notable, and we maintain a model program for others in this nation. However, it is not a time to sit on how things have been done in the past, but to be able to mobilize new thinking, new strategies and new efficiencies.

The underlying fact that guides our work is knowing that there is a growing population of older adults with increased service needs in an era of declining dollars to meet these needs. We project that the 65+ population will increase by 64 percent by the year 2020 - only 16 years away. People are living longer, and as a result the need for many services offered by HSRC is growing. This is the challenge that will shape how we deliver services in the future. HSRC has been and will continue to be an innovative agency that will strive to always meet the needs of our clients and our community.

One such need that has been identified by our board is for a day care facility that will be designed to meet the specialized needs of clients with Alzheimer's and other related dementias. Even though our current Adult Day Health Services program provides quality care for many clients with dementia, there is not enough space for all clients needing service. At this time, some clients ride the bus to our Fortuna facility or go to the Adult Day Health Care of Mad River.

On May 20, we invite the community to share in a celebration of our 30 years of service. We will offer many opportunities for seniors, care providers, community agencies and the general public to learn about what we do in this community and enjoy the day with us. See the story, page 1. We hope you will come and celebrate with us.
