Aging & Disability Resources
New federal grant to serve Del Norte County

by Marianne Nix

The Area Agency on Aging (AAA), in partnership with the California Department of Aging and the San Diego Area Agency on Aging, have been awarded a federal grant to establish Aging and Disability Resource Centers. These projects will be developed exclusively in Del Norte and San Diego counties. AAA grant funds equal $150,000 over three years.

"The Area Agency is proud to receive this funding to develop a 'one-stop' approach in providing aging and disability services," said Jim Davis, AAA board president. "As the population continues to age it becomes even more important to simplify the processes that elders and persons with disabilities go through to get the assistance they need."

The Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC) grant program is part of the president's New Freedom Initiative which works to overcome barriers to community living for people of all ages who have disabilities. The program is a joint federal effort involving the Administration on Aging and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

"The selection of Del Norte County as one of two sites in California speaks highly of the work the Area Agency on Aging has done in creating model rural programs for elders and their caregivers," Davis said. "This funding allows us to build on the work started by the agency in creating the Del Norte InfoCenter. We will be able to enhance our services to older adults as well as integrate service delivery to additional populations." In Del Norte County, approximately 5,000 people are age 60 and older.

ADRC programs may also be called No Wrong Door or portal systems. Typical ADRC services include information and referral, eligibility screening, financial and functional assessment, development and monitoring service plans and benefits counseling.

The project is intended to better integrate the community's long-term care support resources so as to improve accessibility. AAA will work with a variety of agencies and programs to design and implement an ADRC that best serves people living in Del Norte County.

Project development is slated to begin in late August. The ADRC will be located at the AAA Del Norte office, 1225 Marshall Street, Suite 22, Crescent City.

The Area Agency on Aging is a non-profit organization providing a variety of senior, caregiver, volunteer and information services in Area 1 which includes Del Norte and Humboldt counties. It is one of 33 area agencies in the state which were established through the Older Americans Act and the Older Californians Act.

Marianne Nix is the Area Agency's director of information services. For more information you can call her at 707-442-3763, ext. 207.
