Community donations make our 30th year celebration a day to remember

by Joyce Hayes

May 20 was a day to open the Humboldt Senior Resource Center's doors and invite the community to come and see what we are all about. Guests enjoyed tours of programs, a delicious buffet lunch, workshops by local professionals and amazing door prizes throughout the day.

We are grateful to Coast Central Credit Union and Humboldt Bank for sponsoring the event. Humboldt Creamery provided the funds to produce our commemorative water bottle label. The workshops were well attended and enjoyed by everyone. The speakers, Beverley Wolfe of Avalon Restaurant; Donna Summerly, fitness specialist; John M. Daniel, publisher; and Maggie Kraft, Alzheimer's Resource Center director, gave generously of their time and expertise.

Woven throughout the activities was the added excitement of door prize drawings. Thanks to the effort of Jim O'Rourke, HSRC Advisory Council president, local businesses generously provided gifts that kept the excitement high throughout the day. In a time when local businesses are constantly asked for donations, the generosity expressed through their gifts was amazing.

o Jody Riccsoni, owner of Graystone Jewelers, provided six beautiful pearl gifts (pearls, the 30 year anniversary stone).

o Chuck Oppitz, the owner of the Scotia Inn, invited the lucky winner of a gift certificate to enjoy dinner for two and a night's stay at the historical landmark hotel.

o Former Eureka mayor and artist Nancy Flemming donated an oil painting titled "Autumn Light," which reflected her love of Humboldt's natural beauty.

o Joyce Jonte, another local artist, donated one of her lively landscape paintings that was beautifully framed with a gift from MaryLou Bertolini, the owner of the Art center.

We thank them all for their thoughtful, marvelous gifts.

The day would not have been complete without wonderful music provided by Gloria Haley Edwards and the bright fresh flower bouquets supplied by Sun Valley Floral Farms. Vellutini Baking Company and the Arcata and Fortuna Safeway Stores provided festive cakes to make the buffet luncheon extra special.

Certainly all of these gifts reflect the commitment from successful businesses and individuals to give back to the community and show their support for an agency such as the Humboldt Senior Resource Center and the work that we do in promoting independence and dignity for disabled and older adults. We are very lucky to live in a community that is so generous and giving.
