Welcome, Bill Bill Beaumont will be helping out in the Computer Lab as a regular assistant to help with your computer questions, Monday through Friday from 1 to 4 p.m. Bill is with the AARP Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) and has had extensive computer training. Come to the lab and introduce yourself, and he'll be glad to help you learn to use the computer. If you are older than 55 and would like a 20-hour-per-week paid position in the community through SCSEP, please call 822-7027 to see if you meet the income guidelines. Free home repair If you are a resident of Eureka and have a low-to-medium income (up to $38,150 for one or $43,600 for two), you can get minor home repairs done for free. These include grab bars, railing and step repairs, trip-hazard repairs (carpets, flooring), doors, caulking, weather stripping, smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms (and battery changing), and light bulb changing in hard-to-reach places. Call 443-9747, ext. 240 or come into the Dial-A-Ride office for further information. Other programs are available for those outside of Eureka and for major repairs. Meet with executive director Chat & Chew with Joyce at 12:15 p.m. Wednesday, July 7, in the HSRC Dining Room. Joyce Hayes, HSRC's executive director, joins you for an informal monthly luncheon meeting. We invite any seniors who would like to join her table and talk to her. Please take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to get better acquainted with our executive director and let her know your thoughts. Annual Steelhead Lodge trip Sign up for the annual Sign 'N Dine Senior Bus Trip to Klamath for a wonderful dinner at the world-famous Steelhead Lodge. Trip is on July 8, Thursday, and applications will be available in the lobby. If we have any seats left, we will accept applications at the Activities office until Tuesday, July 6. Back to Italy Want to learn Italian? Teacher Max Garibay is back with us again, and the Italian class meets every Wednesday, 12 p.m. Come have fun and learn Italian! Make jewelry Imaginative Earrings class begins Wednesday, July 14, 10:30 a.m. It will meet on the second and fourth Wednesdays monthly. Learn to make beautiful, original earrings with Mariana Krattiger. Veterans Services Government Chat on Monday, July 19 at 10:30 a.m. in the Activity Room will host our special encore guest Jody Burgess of the Humboldt County Veterans' Service Office. If you are a veteran (or know one), you may want to attend and ask any questions you may have about veterans' benefits. No partners needed Line Dancing for Seniors is a popular, ongoing class that meets on Wednesdays at 1:15 p.m. in the Dining Room. Experienced line dancer Marian Baker and her daughter Diana Munoz help out with this wonderful activity. Line dancing is fun to learn, great exercise and you don't need a partner. Monday noon at the movies - and more! Monday Movie Matinee is held every Monday at 12:30 p.m. with popcorn and sugarfree candies, too. See the Monday listings for titles. And since our movies are so popular, during a special movie event this month - Epic Movie Day Wednesday, July 21, at 10:30 a.m. - we will show the first half of a two-part movie (Giant, Cleopatra, Titanic, or Gandhi), then show the second half after lunch, at 12:30 p.m. Memoir writing Stringing the Pearls of Your Past meets on the third Tuesday of the month (July 20) at 12:30 p.m. Beginners are welcome. Join this talented bunch and start getting your own memories recorded for posterity. Everyone has a story to tell. Auf wiedersehn for now There will be no German classes until September. Have a good summer! Summer Sale Coming next month is our Summer Jewelry and Crafts Sale. This long-awaited event will be on Wednesday, Aug. 25, from 9 a.m. 'til 2 p.m. in the Computer Lab. If you would like to sell your own items, call the Activities office to sign up, 443-9747, ext. 228 or ext. 260. Looking ahead to fall Per your requests, we are planning a special presentation on the basics of investing for seniors on Sept. 9. Watch for announcements. Peace Corps Opportunities for Seniors will be presented Oct. 20. Attend and learn about how you could put some adventure into your life while sharing your time and talents with other cultures. Participants are paid a living allowance and receive health care benefits. Washington School reunion All former students of the Washington Elementary School (currently the Humboldt Senior Resource Center) at California and Del Norte Streets are invited Thursday, Sept. 23, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. If you were a student here, please join us for the fun and shared memories on that day. If you know anyone else who was a former student, please tell them about it. If your parents, grandparents or other family members were students or teachers here and you'd like to share their memories with us, you are also welcome.
