Decade of pain control
by Kim Laney

Congress declared 2001 through 2010 the Decade of Pain Control and Research. Currently a bill before Congress would establish a national center for pain and palliative care research.

Legal drugs used to treat pain from surgery, cancer treatments, chronic back and other injuries and neuropathy are often thought to be the only means of relief. The Times-Standard recently reported that Humboldt and Del Norte counties are leading the rest of the state in the use of prescription narcotics per person.

Alternative therapies provide relief for those who suffer from neuropathy and other chronic pain. People who have tried infrared therapy have reduced not only their pain, but also the need for pain medication, some report greater than 75 percent reduction in pain and in medication. The technology available is called Anodyne.

The equipment emits infrared photo energy to increase circulation and reduce pain in the area it is applied. It has been designed to maximize the effectiveness of infrared photo energy by using highly efficient light emitting diodes placed directly on the skin. The technology also assists wound healing and other types of neurological and vascular pain. For details visit www.anodynetherapy com.
