Humboldt Classics Senior Softball bring Lindy Gravelle to North Coast
by Art Jones

About three years ago, when a senior softball teammate from San Jose found out that I was playing in a tournament in Bend, Oregon, with the local Humboldt Classics Senior Softball 65s, he recommended that I make a special effort to see a singer, songwriter and entertainer extraordinaire, Lindy Gravelle, who performs in the Bend area. Last year, while in Bend with the Humboldt 65s, locals Lenny Escarda, Don Evangelinos and I had dinner in Redmond, Oregon, where she was performing.

I approached her during a break, and she visited with us and asked for an autographed ball in exchange for one of her CDs. Later she sang a song she wrote, "There's No Place Like Oregon," presently being considered as adoption for the state song. I asked if she would allow me to sing about the place I call home. After explaining about the flora and fauna of Blue Lake, I sang "My Blue Lake Heaven" to a familiar tune. I promised to bring the whole team to see her next year.

In June, the whole Classics team and wives were entertained by her at a golf resort in Redmond. She even brought her autographed ball for the rest of the team to sign. One ball player's wife commented to me, "I doubted that she could be as good as you said. In fact, she was better!"

The Humboldt Classics Senior Softball Association is excited to be sponsoring Lindy Gravelle's performance on Sunday, Oct. 17 from 6-9 p.m. at the North Coast Inn in Arcata. Enjoy dinner and drinks or just listen and dance to wonderful music. There will be a $5 cover charge at the door, and dinner reservations are recommended.
