Senior Friends
From age 14 to age 83, special volunteers are honored

by Donna Chambers

The Area Agency on Aging recently honored several individuals and one organization for their contributions to seniors in Humboldt and Del Norte counties. At its annual meeting Nov. 16, individual Senior Friend Awards were presented to Betty and Bob Boyce, Andy Coltra, Elizabeth Macias-Holtam and Humboldt Transit Authority transit operators. The President's Award was presented to Sandra K. Fitzpatrick for her outstanding contributions to senior services.

Senior Friends

Betty and Bob Boyce were nominated by Chris Wisner of Food for People as being the "unflagging positive energy and enthusiasm for the Brown Bag Program." Without volunteers like the Boyces, many programs would not be able to continue.

Andy Coltra, 83, was nominated by Sandy Jay Blakely. He has worked with the Crescent City Community Assistance Network since 1995 volunteering up to 40 hours per week and "demonstrating the type of volunteerism every organization dreams of."

Elizabeth Macias-Holtam, 14, was nominated by Fred Chasson and is described as a "ray of sunshine" who gives of herself to the residents of Pacific Health Care through in-room visiting and serving meals; helping with outings, crafts, holidays, bingo and shopping; care of the facility pets, planting flowers, fundraising and being a smiling face showing care.

The Humboldt Transit Authority transit operators were nominated by Barbara Scott-Davies. She wrote, "All bus drivers who drive both city and county buses go out of their way to assist seniors who are traveling on their buses. They show respect to seniors. These people are really heroes to me."

President's Award

Area Agency Board President Jim Davis presented the President's Award to Sandra K. Fitzpatrick for her dedication in serving the Area Agency on Aging for 20 years and her continued interest in providing senior services at the local and state level.

Donna Chambers is the Area Agency's interim executive director.
