Your Voice, Your Choice
by Dolly Bott

Your Voice, Your Choice is a coalition of community advocates who are service providers, people with disabilities, seniors and people who live in outlying areas and depend on public transportation. The purpose of this coalition is to make positive changes in the community for seniors and people with disabilities and to work to rid the community of attitudinal barriers.

This coalition was formed in June 2004 through the collaboration of Tri-County Independent Living, the Public Authority and Area Agency on Aging. The theory is that voices joined together are heard much more clearly and have more weight than 100 individual voices.

Currently the transportation committee is researching the many problems of public transportation and para-transit services in Humboldt County.

Creating a public transit system that works for people needing the service is one of our main goals. Too often the bus does not go where riders need to go. Buses quit working by 6 or 7 p.m., so seniors and people with disabilities are shut off from activities after that time. Many people who use public transit cannot attend church because the buses do not run on Sunday. Also the outlying areas such as Hoopa, Garberville and others have many unmet transportation needs. Your Voice Your Choice focuses on the needs of all Humboldt County.

Your Voice Your Choice welcomes all who want to create positive change in our community. We meet every second Friday of the month at Christ Episcopal Church on 15th & H streets in Eureka. (A wheelchair accessible entrance is located on the 15th Street side.) We meet from 10 a.m. until noon.
