You can live well at any age. Your health is important. When you are healthy, you can enjoy an active lifestyle even into your 80s and 90s. A Preventive Health Care for the Aging (PHCA) assessment can provide you with the information and resources you need to help you stay healthy and active.

The PHCA program of the Department of Health and Human Services Public Health Branch is a county and state funded grant partnership that has been in existence since 1979.

The program serves seniors 55 and older throughout Humboldt and Del Norte counties at 14 sites. It serves people from Crescent City to Garberville and Willow Creek in health clinics held at senior centers, churches and community centers.

What is unique about the program is that you are seen by a public health nurse who conducts a comprehensive health screening free of charge. The screening takes about an hour and consists of reviewing your health history and measuring your height, weight and blood pressure. A Public Health Nurse reviews the medications you are on as well as your nutritional intake. Your hemoglobin and blood glucose can be checked through a finger-stick screening. The nurse will also check you for skin cancers and do a basic screening for vision and hearing.

You will be referred to primary care practitioners, if needed, for any problems you may be having that require attention.

The nurses and office assistants who support the program are passionate about helping seniors find the best quality care they can. In this age of the ten-minute medical visit, having an hour to sit with a professional who cares about you can be quite comforting.

Our goals also encompass reaching out to our senior populations through health education and health fairs. Public health nurses and other health professionals can often be seen on local cable access TV presenting health education information about resources in the community.

We take the time to sit with you and see you, the person. You can protect your health.

Please call us at 707-268-2107 to schedule an appointment at the site closest to you. Experience the care you can receive by a PHCA public health nurse. Roseann Potter and Maggie Velinova-Hipp are senior public health nurses.
