Rx Check-Up
New tool available to help reduce medication mixups

by Julie Sessa

A record booklet is available from the Area Agency on Aging to help reduce the errors associated with taking medications - the Rx Check-Up.

Many things can go wrong when you take medications - at the doctor's office, the pharmacy and at home. Patients forget to take the medication, or don't remember what it's for. The prescription may be filled at a different pharmacy than other medications, opening up the opportunity for medication interactions. The caregiver doesn't know what medications and over-the-counter products are used.

It's not always easy to have a clear picture of your medication routine. But your health is your responsibility.

The Rx Check-Up is a checkbook-sized book that will help you keep an up-to-date record of prescriptions, over-the-counter products and other nutritional supplements. Expect these benefits from using the Rx Check Up:

• Gathers up-to-date information about your latest medications and changes

• Offers quick access by health professionals or caregivers in an emergency

• Reduces medication errors

• Identifies possible drug interactions

• Increases safety in medication use

As always, your best health care advice comes from your doctor and your pharmacist. Show them the book and start the conversation.

Rx Check-Up books will be available at the St. Joseph Health Fair on Feb. 5 at the Bayshore Mall, the HICAP and Senior Information and Assistance offices in Eureka and Crescent City, and at the following pharmacies: Lima's, Cloney's, Willow Creek, Green's.

Medication management tips

• Double check the prescription and medication in the bottle before leaving the pharmacy.

• Keep your medications in the original bottle.

• Keep a list of your medications.

• Set up a schedule for taking medication, perhaps using a pill box organizer, or ask your pharmacist for suggestions.

• Remember to refill your prescription before you run out.

• Ask your doctor or pharmacist to review your medications at least once a year.
