Humboldt Classics
April is senior softball sign-up month

by Arthur Jones

Men who will be at least 50 years of age or older during this calendar year are eligible to play in either the 50s division or the 60s division of the Humboldt Classics Senior Softball League. Presently, there are five teams in the 50's division representing Fortuna, Eureka, Arcata and Blue Lake; as well as five teams in the 60's division.

The season starts around the first week of June and concludes the end of August, with most games being played around 7 p.m. Each team will play a maximum of two games each week, Monday through Thursday. The games are competitive, organized, professionally umpired and subject to the modified rules of World's Championship Senior Softball organization.

Many existing teams have room on their rosters, and the league has lots of room for new teams. The cost averages around $35 per player unless you play for a sponsored team. In addition, there is a 60-, a 65- and a 70-year-old traveling team that competes with teams from southern Oregon in tournaments one weekend per month, and a 65's team being organized to play in the Huntsman's World Senior Games in St. George, Utah, in October.

If you are eligible and interested and want to have fun, fellowship and competition in a active and organized league, or know someone who might, please contact the league's president, Jack Nash, 442-2823 or John French, 442-2050 for more information. Prospective and present members of the league will begin working out daily at Freshwater Elementary School, weather permitting, starting at 5 p.m., Monday. April 4.

Art Jones lives in Blue Lake and plays on four teams in the Humboldt Classics League - a team in the 50s division, on the Blue Lake Rancheria Rookies, 2004 league champs in the 60s division (manager), and on a 60s and the 65s traveling teams that compete against teams from southern Oregon.
