AARP's Driver Safety classes set in May and June by Melanie Johnson The number two traffic violation committed by drivers age 50 and older is improper left turn. Can you guess the number one violation? Probably not. Volunteer instructors for AARP's Driver Safety Program help drivers understand how normal age-related physical changes may affect driving. Learning to compensate for physical changes is an important part of AARP's Driver Safety Program. Volunteer instructors for the course previously known as 55-Alive help mature drivers assess their own driving skills, and they teach ways to improve those skills. Instructors review defensive driving techniques and recent changes in the law, and they discuss local driving problem areas and tips for avoiding them. There is opportunity to share driving concerns like "What's the best thing to do when another driver tries to intimidate me?" There is time to talk about limiting driving and retirement from driving. The program includes videos, discussion and self-assessment quizzes. The cost is $10 per person. Some drivers age 50+ take the class with their parents or older loved ones as a Mother's Day, Father's Day, Grandparent's Day, birthday or other special day gift. Gift certificates are available.
