The Aging Brain The consequences of physical inactivity by Julie Sessa "We were born to be physically active. Unfortunately something has happened, and many of us will die from Sedentary Death Syndrome (SeDS). Basically, we die of inactivity," said Dr. David Swanson, professor of kinesiology at Chico State University. Dr. Swanson is a great role model for incorporating physical activity into daily life - a recent interview was conducted as he chopped wood in the mountains on a beautiful spring day. Dr. Swanson will be in Eureka on June 16 to participate in grand rounds with health professionals and to present an evening talk to the general public. His topic is "The Aging Brain: The Consequences of Physical Inactivity." We strongly encourage people of all ages to attend this lecture at 6:30 p.m. June 16 at the Humboldt County Library to learn what you can do to protect your brain and prevent premature aging. We have always known of the effects of inactivity on the physical body. Now there is strong evidence that physical inactivity affects the aging of the brain. The good news is that if we become active, we may reverse the aging process and the associated diseases. The brain can be reprogrammed. Many physical fitness and activity classes are offered throughout Humboldt and Del Norte counties by city parks departments, adult education, senior centers and others. The Area Agency on Aging has worked with several local organizations on the STRONG Task Force to educate others about the link between activity and maintaining an independent lifestyle. We know that active living can improve our physical well-being, help prevent disease and even treat other diseases. Dr. Swanson is a former resident of Eureka, graduating from Eureka High School. He received his Ph.D. from Stanford University and has served as faculty at UCLA Medical School and University of Colorado School of Medicine. He was Dean of Science and Health at College of the Redwoods and currently is on staff at Chico State University. He was named 2004 Fitness Ambassador of the Year at Stanford University and conducts a senior walking program at Chico State University as the 50-Plus Lifelong Fitness Ambassador. This presentation is being sponsored by the Area Agency on Aging, STRONG Task Force, HumPALS, Humboldt Senior Resource Center and its Alzheimer's Day Care and Resource Center and the Humboldt County Library.
