Anodyne Therapy New pain treatment offered by Patty Glatfelter Almost 9,000 people in Humboldt and Del Norte counties suffer from diabetes. According to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 70 percent of diabetics have nerve damage and circulatory problems. This results in numbness and pain, as well as difficulty while standing and walking, not to mention potential future amputation. Until recently, treatments for this common complication of diabetes, known as peripheral neuropathy, have focused on medications. These medications help treat the sufferer's symptoms, yet do not stop or reverse them. But now there's a new, FDA-approved treatment that can reverse the disease's symptoms for many sufferers. Called Anodyne© Therapy, it increases circulation and reduces pain. According to Anodyne Therapy L.L.C., almost 90 percent of patients who were treated with Anodyne Therapy in pain studies reported total pain relief within 12 45-minute sessions. Anodyne Therapy uses monochromatic infrared photo energy which employs dozens of light-emitting diodes arranged on pads that are placed or strapped in direct skin contact. There's a huge need for this new technology because there are so many diabetics in our area. If, through use of the Anodyne procedure, we can prevent foot ulcers and falls that often result in broken hips, that's a big advancement in treatment. That's why we invested in the equipment and offer Anodyne Therapy at ept Rehabilitation. Anodyne treatments also achieve positive responses to a wide range of conditions, including arthritis. At ept Rehabilitation, patients typically are treated for one hour, three times a week for four weeks. We give Anodyne Therapy for 30 minutes of each hour, then the rest of the time is devoted to therapeutic exercises, balance activities and massage or other appropriate treatments. Patty Glatfelter is a physical therapist in the ept Rehabilitation Arcata office. She can be reached at 825-7250. |
